A short history of Allen & Heath digital mixers
Allen & Heath was founded in London in 1969 by Andrew Stirling and Ivan Nicholas, building mixers for the city's live-music scene at a time when touring PA was still being invented. The company moved to Cornwall in the 1990s and has designed and assembled consoles in Penryn ever since. It has been part of the Audiotonix group — alongside DiGiCo, Solid State Logic and Calrec — since 2016.
The digital era began with iLive in 2006, a modular system that split the control surface from the iDR MixRack so the audio I/O could live at the stage end of a Cat5 snake. GLD followed in 2011 as a smaller, more affordable take on the same idea, and Qu in 2013 brought motorised-fader digital mixing to houses of worship and small venues that had been priced out of it.
The current generation runs on Allen & Heath's own XCVI FPGA core: dLive (2016) at the top, Avantis (2020) as a self-contained XCVI surface, SQ (2018) / SQ+ (2026) in the middle with 96 kHz processing in a compact frame, QU (2023 and revamped for 96kHz in 2025) just below the SQ, and CQ (2023) as an ultra-compact rack mixer aimed at one-person setups. Firmware for these lines ships as a single package per family, and Allen & Heath has historically been good about keeping older releases available — which is exactly the kind of thing this archive exists to make permanent.
How Allen & Heath ships firmware
Allen & Heath firmware updates ship per family rather than per model, so an SQ-5, SQ-6 and SQ-7 all take the same release. Downgrading is sometimes necessary when a show file was built on an older version, which is why every archived version stays available here.
