Mixing tips

Also refer to the Quick Start screen.

Sel key to access processing - Press the associated fader strip Sel key while the Processing screen is active to use the physical controls and screen to adjust the processing (Preamp, EQ, Gate, Comp, Delay). You can also access the associated Routing from here.

Mix key for sends on faders - There are two ways to work with sends on faders:

All sends to one mix - Press the associated master fader strip Mix key - The source faders become the sends to that mix (for Aux and Matrix).

Sends from one channel to all mixes - Press a channel fader strip Mix key - The master faders become the sends from that channel to all the mixes.

The strip LCDs display the routing (for Groups, Aux, Main, Matrix, Mute Groups):

• Assignment:  'ON' = assigned, blank = unassigned
• Pre/Post:  'PRE' = pre-fader, blank = post-fader

To toggle individual assignments - Hold down the Assign key and then press channel Mix keys.

To toggle all assignments - Hold down the Assign key and then press the master Mix key.

To toggle individual pre/post fader settings - Hold down the Pre/Post key and then press channel Sel keys.

To toggle all pre/post fader settings - Hold down the Pre/Post key and then press the master Sel key.

Note Remember to press Mix again to return to the Main mix once you have finished adjusting other mixes.

To work with GEQ on faders - Press the mix master strip Sel key. Then press the 'GEQ fader flip' key to the right of the faders. The faders now show the current GEQ band settings and the LCD strips display their frequency values. The right hand fader strip becomes the associated mix master. The strip meters display the RTA for the currently selected PAFL signal.

Press the mix master PAFL key to make sure you are looking at the RTA for the current mix. Press the associated strip Sel keys to reset frequency bands to 0dB. Press 'GEQ fader flip' again to toggle between the ranges and to return to normal mixing.

To Copy/Paste/Reset parameters - Use the edit keys located between the fader banks.

Copy - Hold down the Copy key and then press a Sel or Mix key. Now hold down the Paste key and press the strip Sel or Mix key of each channel to copy to.

Reset - Hold down the Reset key and then press a Sel or Mix key. This resets the associated parameters to a factory default starting point for mixing.

The following parameters can be copied and reset:

+ Input strip Sel key  = Pol, Trim, HPF, Gate, PEQ, Comp, Delay
+ Master strip Sel key  = Trim, PEQ, GEQ, Comp, Delay
+ Input strip Mix key  = All Sends, Pans, Assign of that input
+ Master strip Mix key  = Sends, Pans, Assign of all sources to mix
+ Preamp Sel key  = Gain, Pad, 48V
+ HPF Sel key  = HPF only
+ PEQ Sel key  = PEQ only
+ GEQ screen Sel button  = GEQ only
+ Gate Sel key  = Gate only
+ Comp Sel key  = Compressor only

Note Copy/Reset of Mix does not affect Pre/Post fader settings.

To set faders to '0' or off - Hold down the Reset key and then nudge each fader up to set it to 0dB, or down to set it to minimum position.

To reset MIDI Strips - Hold down the Reset key and then press the MIDI Strip Sel key. This does not change the assigned MIDI messages but will reset their values to all its switches off and fader to minimum position. You can restore the factory default MIDI messages by recalling Scene 498 in the Template Shows.

To make channels safe from Scene recall - If you want to prevent certain channel or master parameters being overwritten when Scenes are recalled (for example walk-in music), hold down the 'Safe' key to the right of the faders and then press their strip Mix keys. The strip LCD displays a 'SAFE' icon to show channels that are safe.

Quick Start Setup Guide

Dimmer  -  Press and hold the Setup key for a few seconds to open the Dimmer screen at full brightness. There are two controls, one to adjust the brightness of the Touchscreen, the other the brightness of the control LED indicators and strip LCD displays. Touch a control and adjust using the screen rotary.

Date/Time  -  Go to the Setup / Utility / Date/Time screen.

Fader Calibration  -  If this is needed, go to the Setup / Utility / Calibration screen and touch Calibrate. Follow the instructions to calibrate the accuracy of the motor faders.

Note You may need to recalibrate the faders after a firmware update or full system reset.

Touch Screen Calibration  -  If this is needed, go to the Setup / Utility / Calibration screen and touch Calibrate. Follow the instructions to calibrate the accuracy of the touchscreen.

Note You may need to recalibrate the touch screen after a firmware update or full system reset.

Recall a Template Show  -  Go to the Setup / Memory / Show Manager screen and recall a Template Show with standard configuration of mix architecture, layout and user preferences to give you a familiar starting point. Open the Scenes screen:

Edit to suit your preferences, then store afterwards as your own starting point User Show. For example, you could load the Template2 LRM Show and change its main mix configuration to quickly set up a different type of mix such as LCR or LR+Mono sum.

Three Template Shows are available. Refer to the Setup / Memory / Show Manager screen Help page for information on these.

Configure the mixes  -  If you need to edit the mix configuration go to the Setup / Config / Mixer Config screen to change the type of Main Mix and combinations of mono or stereo Groups, Auxes, FX and Matrix you want. You can configure up to 30 buses and 20 mix processing outputs.

Set your Aux routing  -  The FOH Template Show default is all Aux sends set as monitor mixes with assignments On and set for Pre-fade. Global source for each Aux is Post-PEQ. Monitor Template Show default is Auxes set Post-fade. FX sends are set Post-fade. Edit these settings if you wish to change them or if you change the mix configuration.

Assign the fader strip layout  -  Edit the strip layout to suit the way you prefer to mix using the Setup / Control / Strip Assign screen to drag-and-drop channels and masters into the 4 Layers each in fader Banks 1 and 2.

Assign the SoftKeys  -  Use the Setup / Control / SoftKeys screen to check and assign the function of each of the SoftKeys.

Assign the Custom Rotary functions  -  Use the Setup / Control / Surface Prefs screen to assign the function of the strip rotary controls when you press the Custom 1 or Custom 2 key. You can choose any Aux mix, FX send, channel Direct out Level, HPF frequency, Compressor threshold, or leave unassigned.

Alt View key  -  Use the Setup / Control / Alt View screen to choose to show Channel Number, Socket Number or fader dB value in the fader strip displays when you press and hold the Alt View key.

Other preferences  -  There are many user preferences you can set to suit the way you prefer to mix. These are accessed as options within the screens or using the Pull-up in the lower toolbar. For example:

Scene Manager page / OPTIONS pull-up - Confirmation option
Sel Routing page / DIR OUT SRC pull-up - Direct Out Source
Sel PEQ page / OPTIONS pull-up - 20-20k Range, Fill option
Setup / Audio / PAFL page - Several options
Setup / Audio / Talkback page / SOURCE pull-up
Setup / Audio / USB Audio page / OPTIONS pull-up
I/O / Monitor page - ME-1 or Aviom mode

Set up your Scenes - A Scene stores all parameters. Each has a 'Recall Filter' so you can choose which parameters to recall. You can also block complete channels or certain parameters in all Scenes using 'Safes'. Default is no items filtered, and only the SoftKeys made Safe. Decide how you want to use your Scenes and set the Safes and Recall Filters as required. For example, you could set an iPod walk-in music channel to be fully Safe.

When you have finished configuring your system, go to the Scenes screen to save settings you need for instant recall. You could delete or overwrite the 'Reset' Scene or create 'Start' Scenes for different situations. Go to the Scene Safes page to set channels or parameters fully safe from Scene recall.

Archive your settings as a Show -  Go to the Setup / Memories / Shows screen to name and archive your complete configuration, preferences and all Scenes as a User Show. You can copy this to a USB key and transfer it to a computer as a backup.

To Reset GLD

If you are a new user or wish to clear previous settings you can reset GLD parameters to a known starting point. There are several different ways to do this:

• Use the surface Reset key to reset parameters
• Recall a Library to overwrite processing
• Recall a Scene to overwrite multiple parameters
• Recall a Show to overwrite all settings and Scenes
• Perform a full System Reset using a power up page
• Reset User Profiles and passwords using an internal jumper.

Save settings before resetting the system - Performing a reset overwrites GLD settings. If you wish to keep your current settings then make sure you save them first.

'Board Reset' Scenes

Factory default Template Shows include 'Reset' Scenes for the GLD80 or GLD112 in positions 1 and 2 to instantly reset the current processing and mix parameters to the Template default without affecting the mix configuration, user preferences and other Scenes. These are backed up in positions 499 and 500. You can recall this Scene or any other you have set up as your own starting point. Protect parameters from Scene recall using its Scene Recall Filter and global Scene Safes.

Starting with a Template or User Show

If you want clear the GLD for a new event or after another user has finished you can load one of the several factory default Template Shows or a User Show. This will clear or overwrite all Scenes and reset all settings to a familiar configuration and layout. To load a Show go to the Setup / Memories / Show Manager screen.

Loading a Template Show will:

• Restore a default configuration and layout
• Reset user preferences
• Zero the board current settings
• Reset the processing, routing and patching
• Clear all Scenes
• Clear all User Libraries

Note Back up your current settings as a User Show if you want to keep them to use again in the future.

System Reset

* This should only be done if you need to completely wipe the memory and restore the GLD to its factory default reset settings.

A Full System Reset will:

• Restore a reset configuration, layout and preferences
• Reset the processing, routing and patching
• Clear all Scene memories
• Clear all Libraries
• Clear all Shows stored in the GLD

A Full Reset does not clear User Profiles and passwords.

Note  Before you start, make sure you have copied any User Shows you wish to keep to your USB key.

To fully reset the GLD first power it off without using the Home screen Power Down button. Power up and wait for the ‘GLD not shut down correctly’ screen to appear.

Touch the Advanced button and then touch Reset GLD.

Confirm that you wish to do this. Touch OK to reboot the system into its reset state.

Once the reset is complete we recommend you load a Template or User Show.

To clear User Profiles and Passwords

This requires a hard reset by setting a jumper within the GLD. Disassembly is required. We recommend that this be carried out by an appointed Allen & Heath service agent.
